Details
Genmaicha means “brown rice tea”. Some toasted rice grains may pop like popcorn . This is the reason why this tea is sometimes colloquially called “popcorn tea”. The story goes that originally, Genmaicha was consumed by the poor Japanese, the less expensive rice was used to reduce the share of tea in the mixture and therefore to reduce the price. At present, it is drunk at all levels of society and particularly during meals.
